HISTORY The San Antonio Gear Grinders was started in 1951. We are the 2nd oldest car club still in operation in the United States and the oldest car club still in operation in Texas. On this page, I will present various magazine articles and photos featuring members. In some cases I will re-type parts of the articles for clarity. In the future, I will add more content.
The following magazine article is about Stanley Wilson during the 1950's. The article is incomplete but still interesting. Click the photo to open in a new window to read the article. The next photo was featured in a magazine. I re-typed the print as the scan I had wouldn't be legible. Click the photo to enlarge in a new window. This mid-'60s photo of the Gear Grinders car club was taken in the parking lot of the Wonderland shopping center in San Antonio. Stanley wasn't with the club that day. Kneeling to the right of the front wheel of the asymmetrical custom Thunderbird is Kit Carlisle. At the far right of the photo is Eddie Baumann. Bill Mano, seen standing with the plaid shirt, worked at a local Chevy dealer and equipped his 39 Chevy (pictured) with a smallblock and a four-speed. Directly in front of the Chevy's grille with the young boy on his knee is Will Hodges, and to his right is Sonny Bippert, one of Eddie Baumann's Top Fuel crew members. The Gear Grinders also joined a handful of other area clubs to form the Alamo Timing Association, which organized occasional races at an abandoned airstrip called Martindale Field.
Car Craft Magazine August 1965 featured Gear Grinder Kit Carlisle and his Model T hot rod. Click the photo to open in a new window to read the article. Another member Will Hodges was
also featured in Car Craft with his Tall "T" From Texas!
